
Laboratory Safety is a very broad term. At Columbia University, Laboratory Safety encompasses the recognition, evaluation and control of all hazards associated with working in a laboratory. The Laboratory Safety portion of EH&S has primary responsibility for all aspects of safety in the labs.
The Chemical Hygiene Officer and the Hazardous Materials Manager also act as the liaison between the University and the various regulatory agencies. The different types of services and responsibilities listed below are only those which are easily defined. Many aspects of Laboratory Safety are not easily classified. Simply put, Laboratory Safety applies to any and all safety issues related to laboratories.
