Radioactive Materials Shipping Guidelines
Radioactive materials and their shipments are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Department Of Transportation (DOT), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Air Transportation Association (IATA), New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), and the New York City Department Of Health And Mental Hygiene (NYC DOH).
Any students or university employees involved in preparing samples for shipping, packaging materials, handling such packages, preparing related paperwork, or signing to authorize shipments must undergo specific training and maintain records of this training (i.e; by printing a copy of your training certificate from RASCAL).
Transportation of radioactive material to either another institution, or Columbia University campus (E.g. Nevis to Morningside, Medical Center to LDEO), is acceptable only through a permitted commercial carrier. This excludes private vehicle, mass transit, and/or shuttle bus.
The Shipment will be offered to the carrier by EH&S from the laboratory after the intent to ship form is submitted. You may call EH&S for guidance at any point.
Are you shipping a Radioactive material or a mixed chemical/radioactive material?
