Environmental/Waste Management
Columbia University’s Environmental Safety Program is focused on protecting human health and safeguarding our air, land and water resources from impacts that that could potentially result from a wide variety of University operations. This is accomplished, in part, through the Environmental Management System (EMS), which defines the applicable environmental requirements and establishes a system for assigning responsibility for each, as well as through continued partnerships with University stakeholders in developing and implementing environmentally-friendly programs across Columbia’s campuses.
The Environmental Safety Program concentrates on the anticipation, evaluation, prevention, and mitigation of a multitude of environmental issues by taking a proactive approach to environmental management and collaborating with members of the University community to ensure consideration of environmental issues in University business activities. Our program coverage includes:
- Air Resources Management
- Emergency/Chemical Spill Response
- Hazardous Waste Management
- Oil Storage and Handling
- Recycling and Green Initiatives
- Universal Waste Management
- Water Resources Management
